Azind Duo – concert
5 September 2021 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm€9
‘Azind’ is the Yiddish word for ‘now’ and a freshly baked duo dedicated to traditional klezmer. Although the duo is the simplest ensemble form, it is also a chance for musicians and listeners to fully absorb musical communication and interaction or to enjoy the subtleties that human sensitivity can perceive. In a varied program, Alina Bauer and Nicolaas Cottenie offer an insight into the rich Jewish music tradition of Eastern Europe, take the audience into an imaginary past and bring the past into the ‘now’. The two musicians concentrate on their first instrument, the violin, but in the meantime Azind is much more than a violin duo: you can also hear the accordion and mandola, and this creates a variety of duo sounds that are still firmly associated with traditional klezmer music is. Alina Bauer gained her first ensemble experience in school orchestras, choirs and big bands. The desire to become a professional musician was established early on. During her studies in musicology and music education, she came into contact with klezmer music, the fascination of which she never let go. After spending a few years in Belgium to study jazz violin in Brussels, she now lives with her family in Leipzig. Her most important band projects to date: Bakad Kapelye, Belleville Swing Club, String Carpet, Halva and Azind. Nicolaas Cottenie (violin, accordion) from Belgium has been professionally involved with klezmer music for more than 10 years. With his group Maggid he won the Moshe Beregovski Young Talent Award for Klezmerensemble in 2011. At the music academy in Antwerp, he spent years researching the relationship between improvisation and composition in, among other things, Eastern European music. With his band Halva, he made two CDs on which he uses his own compositions to investigate the connections between traditional Yiddish music and the cultures that surround it. He currently lives in Leipzig.
