How can void be used to create an image?
In what ways can our body tell the story of its future disappearance?
Can our own death be used as material and inspiration for creative work?
And if you could create your own farewell ceremony, what would that look like?
In this 3 day workshop I will share the working methods I’ve explored for the development of my solo piece – Once I am Not – Rehearsal For a Final Departure.
The workshop will integrate textual, visual and performative research. Together, we will explore the void we are used to fill – the empty space, and the void that will never be filled – that which we will leave behind (hopefully), after we die. I wish to suggest that void is not empty at all, but rather rich with materials to work with. And so, working with the idea of death is a way to create new life.
During the workshop we will explore 3 main subjects:
1. The void – Through a series of practical exercises, we will play with a formalistic approach to void, asking questions like – How can we embody absence? What images can we find in an empty space? In what ways, if at all, can language describe void? And what will the void we leave after we die look like?
2. Death as inspiration – We will discuss different approaches to death and learn about creative ways others have chosen to cope with death. If we dare, we will try to imagine and describe our own death, and explore the emotions it confronts us with – Is it just fear and despair? Or maybe also hope? Passion for life? Urgency? Inspiration? Motivation? We will use all this as material for textual and performative exercises.
3. Departure as a performative act – How do you leave this world? Exploring different ways to leave a stage can be a good way to practice. What needs to be taken care of? What have you got to do / say / dance / sing before you go? What kind of departure ceremony will you plan for yourself? And which instructions will you leave for those left?
